5K Helps Support Group Keeping Babies Safe

The Warren-based nonprofit works to provide safer cribs and equipment to hospitals, nursery schools and homes.

Each week, we’ll tell you about one great idea to give you a much deserved break, and make your life a little easier, maybe a whole lot easier.

This week, we're recommending a nice walk (or run) through the Somerset Hills on a fall day to help protect babies from dangerous cribs—the 5K event set for Sept. 29 benefitting the Warren-based non-profit, Keeping Babies Safe.

The fundraising event draws several hundred participants to Harry Dunham Park, in Basking Ridge, each year in support of KBS' goal of replacing unsafe baby cribs in nursery schools and clinics around the country. Surprising as it may be, many such places are unaware of recalled cribs, which may be defective or even unsafe in design.

The charity was launched in 2005 by Warren resident Joyce Davis, after her own son suffocated in an unsafe playpen.

"Pediatricians know about the latest safe sleep standards, but they don't always know about the products," she said in a 2012 interview about her mission to improve the safety at institutions working with newborns and young babies.

Since its founding, KBS has been recognized by several medical organizations, as well as enjoyed sponsorships from Toys 'R Us and other corporations to purchase safer equipment for facilities.

The annual 5K is one of the charity's major fundraising events, and runners and walkers are invited to join in. Registration is easy with the online registration form, or look for a team to sponsor—or even be a sponsoring partner.
