Bernards High Mountaineers Football Back on Saturday Night

Hurricane Sandy may have blown the scheduled Nov. 3 game for undefeated Bernards High School Mountaineers football team, but the game against Governor Livingston High School now is set to be played at New Providence High School at 6 p.m., said Head Coach Jon Simoneau.

The contest against the Berkeley Heights team is the last regular season game for the Mountaineers, Simoneau said.

Simoneau said the teams are donating the proceeds from Saturday's game to the American Red Cross. The crowd also is asked to wear red to the game, he said.

The American Red Cross, along with volunteers and emergency workers from Bernardsville, has been running a shelter in the lower gymnasium at Bernards High School since Oct. 29 as a place to go either during the day or overnight for those who need shelter from the power outages, cold in heatless houses or other impacts from Hurricane Sandy.

Team members have been volunteering at the shelter

Simoneau said that team members have been volunteering at the shelter after practices during the last week.

Shelter Manager Janet Murnick said on Friday afternoon that 31 people had stayed in the shelter the previous night, and that others had just come to warm up or shower before going home to sleep. She said the shelter will remain open as long as needed.
