Ambulance, Car Collide by Bernardsville Train Station

A Bernardsville ambulance reportedly struck a car turning into the Bernardsville train station on Monday afternoon when the car turned in front of the emergency vehicle, bringing more ambulances from the nearby fire and rescue squad building and also from Basking Ridge, said Bernardsville Police Chief Kevin Valentine.

The crash was reported at 3:05 p.m. on Monday, and resulted in the two people in the car being transported to Morristown Medical Center, according to the accident report, which had yet to be completed later on Monday afternoon.

Three volunteer first aid squad members on the ambulance also received minor injuries, the police chief said.

Valentine said that the ambulance had left the Bernardsville Fire Co. and Rescue Squad building further south on Mine Brook Road (Route 202) and was heading north to respond to a call for a carbon monoxide alarm on Post Lane.

According to the report, a car heading south on the road stopped to turn into the train station, when the ambulance struck on the other vehicle on the passenger side. The accident took place at the intersection with Claremont Road, Valentine said.

The report did not include names or further circumstances of the crash as of about 90 minutes later.

Investigation still underway later on Monday

The accident still is being investigated, Valentine said on Monday evening.

Valentine said the southbound lane of Mine Brook Road, heading south from Olcott Square, had been closed while the accident was cleared and other emergency vehicles headed to the scene.

He said the Bernardsville Fire Co. and another ambulance from the borough and arrived.

The borough volunteers extricated the passenger from the car that had been struck with the assistance of the Basking Ridge Fire Co. and First Aid Squad, which also was called to the location, the report said.

Valentine said that he did not have information on the extent of the injuries for the car's driver and passenger as of that time.
