Millington Savings Bank Celebrates Essay Contest Winners

Millington Savings Bank concluded its first annual “America Saves Week” essay contest with an awards ceremony, held at the bank’s headquarters location on Saturday, March 1st. To help encourage saving at a young age, the bank conducted a community-wide essay writing contest open to all grade levels from K-12. Held in conjunction with America Saves Week (February 24 – March 1, 2014), a national event that encourages people to start a savings plan and build personal wealth, students were invited to write an essay on the importance of saving early and what they were saving for in particular.

A panel of judges reviewed submissions, and winners were chosen in three grade categories: K-5, 6-8 and 9-12. The top winners, as well as runner-ups, from every category received cash awards. In addition, all entrants received a free coin bank to further encourage saving.

“The essay contest provided Millington Savings Bank with a wonderful opportunity to connect with families in our community,” stated Michael Shriner, Millington Savings Bank President and CEO. “We spent quality time with both customers and non-customers, focusing on values like learning why saving money is important and the art of traditional writing. And while our bank has kept pace with all the latest in banking technology, we are proud to also reinforce the good old-fashioned values that have helped us remain strong for over 100 years,” he added.
