First Day of School Varies in Somerset Hills, Bedminster

Kindergarten and new students in Bedminster school this week to attend orientation, new students' ice cream social.

If you're a kid at the Bedminster Township Public School, and you have a big brother or sister at Bernards High School, you can kick back for another day of summer this September.

While school staff is due to report to the kindergarten through grade 8 in Bedminster on Tuesday, the first scheduled day of school for all students is next Monday, Sept. 9.

True, kindergarten orientation at the Bedminster school is set for 3:30 p.m. on Wednesday. And new student orientation, if you're just moving into Bedminster, is scheduled for 3 p.m. on Friday — to be followed by an ice cream social for those new students to last from 3:30 p.m. to 4:15 p.m. Now, that's a good day of school.

Staff also is scheduled to report to the Somerset Hills School District in Bernardsville, a regional district serving students from Bernardsville, Far Hills and Peapack-Gladstone, along with tuition-paying students from Bedminster at Bernards High School, on Tuesday and Wednesday.

All local school districts in the area have scheduled Thursday, the Jewish holiday of Rosh Hashanah, as a day off.

Then, on Friday, all Somerset Hills students in the Bedwell Elementary School, Bernardsville Middle School and Bernards High, are due to report for a full day of school.

Somerset Hills school officials last week said that usually the Bedminster and Somerset Hills school districts coordinate their calendars. But not this year.
