Bernardsville Library Kicks Off Summer Reading Program

Another session of signing up for reading activities and decorating bag for summer reading books scheduled for Thursday.

The Bernardsville Public Library's summer reading program kicks off this week with sign-ups. Preschoolers through high school students are asked to pledge to read a specific number of books over the summer, from now through Aug. 9, and will receive a prize when they reach that goal.

Multiple prizes to be awarded

Each week, from June 24 through Aug. 3, those who sign up will be awarded a prize for reading a book that week, according to the library's website.

And besides winning a prize when they reach their pledged goal, those who meet that goal then will be entered into a random drawing to win more prizes.

Those who register for summer reading will receive a goal will win a prize just for signing up.

A final session offering a chance to sign up for summer reading activities and decorate a bag for summer reading books is scheduled for 3 to 5 p.m. on Thursday at the library at 1 Anderson Hill Road in Bernardsville.

One summer reading bag will be available per child signed up for summer reading while supplies last, according to information from the library. No sign-up is needed for the free library craft.

In addition to reading, the library this summer will offer a number of programs that have to do with the Dig Into Reading theme. Participants can come to the library to learn about dinosaurs, burrowing animals, dig into the past, and more.

Children between the ages of 3 to 8 also can be signed up with a Book Buddy!

A Book Buddy is a student entering grades 6 to 12 who is receiving community service cred for reading to someone younger who is not a family member. Book Buddies will also listen while a younger child reads to them. Each summer, the Bernardsville Library offers this community service opportunity to students as part of the summer reading program.

Parents must request a Book Buddy in advance and be willing to attend the Book Buddy reading times.
