A loud explosion was heard near a bridge that marks the finish line in the annual race, the New York Times reported. A third explosion occurred later at the John F. Kennedy Library in Boston, which police told CNN is likely connected to the marathon bombings.

McLean said he finished the race shortly after 1 p.m. Monday, and met up with his family right after, before starting to head toward South Boston where he is staying with a friend.

"My 3-year-old daughter wanted to stop at a park to play, then I got a text message saying please call," he said.

McLean said he has a friend whose husband works in a building near the finish line for the marathon, and they knew about the explosions before the police responded.

"I started hearing police sirens and, shortly after, a helicopter in the sky," he said. "Pretty quickly there was a flurry of activity on Facebook, and checking on the news."

"I have friends also running the race, and I was scrambling to find out if everyone was OK," he added. "All the people I know are accounted for."

McLean said he was fortunate that he and his family got out of the area before the explosions.

"I feel terrible for those people who weren't as lucky," he said.
