The A&P supermarket, a longtime tenant at its location off Route 206 in Bedminster, is due to close on Feb. 23, as the Somerset Hills Shopping Center makes plans for an update and possible expansion.

The store was covered on Friday with signs saying that merchandise within was being discounted by between 10 to 50 percent, with all sales final.

However, the larger, more modernized A&P supermarket at Dewy Meadow Village off King George Road in Basking Ridge is "definitely" remaining open, said Jules Leopold, manager at that store.

"We are not closing the store," Leopold said on Saturday. He said that the other A&P in Bedminster is closing because that supermarket's lease had expired.

Judy Sullivan, Bedminster Township administrator, said the A&P's lease expires around April 1.

"The new tenant may be The Fresh Market," Sullivan said on Friday. "The landlord has presented a plan to totally renovate the property and accommodate the new tenant. There may be other changes with current tenants."

The A&P in Bedminster was a mainstay from the days before the township built up into a more suburban community.

Does anyone remember when this was the only supermarket in the area?

Yes, I was raised in Pluckemin and so was my mother. I also remember Buxton's and that the P-G Bank had a branch where DD is now. We all thought that A&P would step up its game when King's came in - sadly that wasn't true. Also, I've heard a rumor that Fresh Market isn't coming - apparently the soil is toxic from the old Martha's Cleaners and expansion isn't possible without remediation.

The Fresh Market operates around 150 stores and has been around for 30 yrs. Great food and service. public company (TFM) with strong reputation.

I know The Fresh Market from visiting Longwood Gardens in PA and stopping by their Glenn Mills location. I'm really looking forward to them opening up - waaay more than rumors of Trader Joes going into the old DPW site!

I have always gone by this store going to the dunkin donuts and to go up down 202 to Bridgewater, I knew the store was open but because of the signs and blinds in the windows I always thought it looked like it had been out of business for a long time.. Now I guess they finally are for real!

It's a shame. You couldn't even go to the store for a gallon of milk. It had a bad smell to it. They were charging $5 for a gallon of milk. All they had to do was put a little effort into the store and it probably would have worked.

I feel for the staff that will now have to find other work in a dismal economy. In years past, many in the area worked there when they were in high school (back before the area got so affluent and kids actually worked; today, most area kids would sooner be seen driving daddy's two-year-old Audi than hold a job).

A former employee told me most of the staff is crazy. Not sure if that was a requirement to work there or an effect of the job. Hell, maybe all the chemicals from the drycleaners affected their brains?

It was the de facto convenience store in the area. While King's has an arguably better selection, their prices are 15-40% higher. At A&P, as long as you checked the expiration dates and grabbed the cold stuff from the back of the refrigerated sections, it was ok. I bought seafood there. Once. The owners/managers of this store should have been cited long ago. I don't think there is a Dept of Health in Bedminster.

If the area is indeed contaminated, don't be surprised to see the whole corner become a wasteland. Or maybe a RiteAid (what's the difference?).

I used to work at the A&P, and ate at Buxtons regularly. Gonna miss the place. Wonder if they ever found the class ring that I lost.

Gosh, you are making me miss Buxtons, although I used to eat at one in Morris County.

The restaurant is closed because of the contaminated water from the dry cleaners. Heard that the whole strip had contaminated water. We do need another supermarket in addition to the over priced Kings.

The reality is King's is not over-priced if you do an honest price comparison with other supermarkets in the Somerset Hills area. If you want cheaper, you'll have to drive to a less affluent area. Moreover King's was the only place in Bedminster Twp that gave a crap about the residents after Sandy. The local government certainly didn't.

Less affluent? That is a joke. Why does a gallon of milk cost $5 at Kings and $2.65 at Wegman's? Wegman's blows Kings away. Not all items at Wegman's are cheap, but your day to day items such as cleaning supplies, milk, bread and paper goods are priced much better. King's doesn't offer anything different. Same products at an increased cost. They do not pay more for the same products offered much cheaper else where.

I second the vote for a Trader Joes, or, a Whole Foods.

Is the store still scheduled to close on the 23rd? Just curious what the closing sales are like and if there is even any non-perishable food left.
